ITS Benefits Graphs

These two 3D surface plots show sample results from a study conducted by Mitretek Systems on the costs and impacts of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS).  The results are from a study based on future morning rush-hour traffic in Seattle, Washington.  The plots show the total travel time benefits of the surface transportation system with ITS compared to without ITS, under a variety of traffic demand, weather conditions, and accident rates.  The left chart shows the percentage delay savings, whereas the right plot shows the total absolute savings (delay reduction).  The benefits are least when the demand is about average, the weather is good, and there are few accidents.  These are the conditions the default signal and freeway control settings are designed for, and most drivers know there best routes.  ITS benefits are highest when the conditions vary from this nominal conditions.

Simply click on a plot to stop the rotation.  Then position the cursor on the plot and move the mouse to rotate the plot around the vertical axis.  Use any standard control to zoom in or out, or view the plots from a different angle.
